“Ich bin gekommen, damit sie das Leben
haben und es in Fülle haben.” (Joh 10,10)
Der Internationale Tag der Umwelt (World
Environment Day) wird alljährlich am 5. Juni begangen und ist
eine der wichtigsten Möglichkeiten, durch welche die Vereinten
Nationen weltweit Umweltbewusstsein aktivieren und auf politischer
Ebene Aufmerksamkeit und Aktivität verstärken können. Er ist uns ein
Anruf, allen Ernstes den Zustand unserer Umwelt zu überprüfen und
Aktionen zu überlegen, die machbar sind für Einzelpersonen, Gruppen,
Nationen und die ganze Weltgemeinschaft, um alles Leben auf der Erde
zu erhalten.
Das Thema des diesjährigen Welt-Umwelttags – Gib der Gewohnheit
einen Stoß! Hin zu einer niedrigen CO2-Emission – reflektiert die
Überzeugung, dass der Klimawandel eines der dringendsten moralischen
und zentralen Themen unserer Zeit ist. Zuverlässige
wissenschaftliche Auskünfte deuten darauf hin, dass die Erderwärmung
schneller als angenommen voranschreitet und - wenn innerhalb von 20
Jahren gehandelt wird - die schlimmsten Auswirkungen des
Klimawandels und Artenverlusts eventuell verhindert werden könnten.
Es besteht äußerst dringlicher Handlungsbedarf.
Es ist wichtig, mutige
Entscheidungen zu treffen, ehe es zu spät ist, Entscheidungen, die
widerspiegeln, wie eine starke Einheit zwischen der Menschheit und
der gesamten Schöpfung von neuem hergestellt werden kann. (Vgl.

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on June 5, is one
of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations
stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances
political attention and action. It is a time to seriously examine
the state of the environment and to consider actions each may take
as individuals, communities, countries, and as a global community to
preserve all of life on Earth.
The World Environment Day theme for 2008, Kick the Habit! Towards a
Low Carbon Economy, reflects the conviction that climate change is
one of the most serious moral and defining issues of our times. The
best scientific information seems to suggest that global warming is
happening more quickly than anticipated and there is a window of
opportunity of twenty years to act in order to avoid the worst
effects of climate change and species loss. It is a matter of great
urgency!

that reflect knowing how to re-create a strong alliance between
humanity and the earth." (Pope Benedict XVI, September 2, 2007).
